Is Google Ads Difficult?

Is Google Ads difficult? That depends on a number of things. Unfortunately, many people who’ve given up on Google Ads have done so mainly because they did not take time to learn the features correctly, or they did not give their campaigns enough time to run.

And so, they have a negative view of Google Ads. The reality is that many businesses in a wide range of industries are seeing the benefits of advertising on Google. That’s mainly because it’s the only platform that allows you to target people people who are searching for your products or services. There are a few others like Microsoft Ads but are nowhere near as popular or effective as Google Ads.

However, it’s important to know what is available in your Google Ads account, before you can determine what work you need to do.

Google Ads has 9 different campaign types that you can choose from. You need to create a campaign to be able to advertise. And the goal you have will determine the type of campaign that you setup.

Campaign Types

These are the primary campaign types you can setup and run in Google Ads including details of what you can expect:

SearchSearch campaigns are the most popular and are used by most advertisers to promote their products or services. That’s because they allow you to target people who are actively searching for your products or services and means you can achieve a better return for your ad spend compared to other campaign types. So, you’ll need to do some keyword research to find keywords to bid on and create responsive search ads to target searches. Creating a Search campaign is not difficult but will require close monitoring in the first few weeks of launching it.

Smart – this is a basic campaign that’s mainly used by people who are new to Google advertising. It is an automated campaign with most decisions like which searches to target and bids to set, made by the system. So, it allows you to get started quickly in a few minutes by providing a few details like ad text, keyword ideas and location, and then the system takes over. However, with time you should move up to Search campaigns, because this is a basic campaign type which is hard to scale up

Display – with Display ads, you will advertise on the Google Display network, which is a network of over 4 million websites and apps from across the globe. It reaches over 90% of Internet users and is the largest advertising network on the web. You can pick the websites and apps to advertise on or allow the system to automatically place your ads based on the context. You’ll need some image ads and responsive display ads to advertise on this network. It’s a little more difficult to advertise with a Display campaign because there are many targeting options to pick from but if you start simple and keep tweaking things will improve.

Video – you can advertise on YouTube and across the web if you have some videos to promote. Your videos should be available on YouTube for you to be able to promote them. And there are different video campaign sub-types that you can create. Creating a video campaign is not difficult and with a lot of testing, you’ll be able to run effective campaigns.

Performance Max – this is a new campaign type that allows you to reach people across all of Google with a single campaign. This campaign is easy to setup and you’ll provide a few details like ad assets and your location and language targeting and the system will place the ads in the most relevant places.

Discovery – this is another campaign type that places your ads automatically based on their likelihood to achieve good conversions for you. Your ads will appear on YouTube, Gmail and Discover. And you’ll provide a few assets and start advertising in minutes.
